Mena, who reportedly beat over 2000 other men for the part, said there were many misconceptions about his supposed post-Aladdin success.
'"He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers," he paraphrased, 'It's none of those things.

I haven't had a single audition since Aladdin came out.'
'It's like, I'm sitting here being like, okay, Aladdin just hit $1 billion — can I at least get an audition? Like I'm not expecting you to be like, "Here's Batman." But can I just get in the room?
… Can you just give me a chance?' he said.
Sour grapes?

Fans were quick to point out why the actor might have made a jab at the Little Mermaid, with one writing, 'Your film reached a billion but you're still jobless… seems like you got other things to worry about.'
Others wrote in defense of Bailey, with one commentator stating: 'Halle Bailey is a true star & 'The Little Mermaid' is about to eclipse everything.'
Another part of the fierce response might be that fans are feeling protective of the film, after sporadic online backlash cropped up in response to a black woman's casting in a role that was previously assumed to be for a white woman.
The actress and singer was cast as Ariel in Disney's live action Little Mermaid in 2019.
Halle previously shared that she was shocked to see the slew of hateful comments over her casting.

Last month it was revealed that iconic songs from The Little Mermaid — which also stars Melissa McCarthy as sea witch Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton — soundtrack have had their lyrics changed to reflect consent in the film.
Classic tracks such as Kiss The Girl and Poor Unfortunate Souls will feature different lyrics.
Composer Alan Menken told : 'There are some lyric changes in Kiss the Girl because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel].
